Why Robotics

Robotics provides a powerful way for studnets to engage wit hSTEM in a meaningful, hands-on way. By building and programming robots, students apply math, science, and logic while developing creativity and confidence. Most importantly, they learn that problem-solving is a process, and they are learning through play.

  • The Afterschool Robotics Program is a hands-on STEM enrichment program where students explore robotics, coding, and engineering through guided building challenges and collaborative problem-solving.

Designed for beginners and experienced students alike, this program meets twice a week and allows students to progressively build skills over the course of the semester. Students work with LEGO® robotics kits to design, build, and program robots while learning how techology, math, and engineering connect in real-world applications.

    • Foundational coding and computational thinking skills

    • Engineering design and problem-solving strategies

    • Logical thinking and creativity through hands-on challenges

    • Collaboration, communication, confidence

    • Perserverance through testing, troubleshooting, and improvement

    • Building and modifiying LEGO robots

    • Learning Scratch coding concepts

    • Completing weekly engineering challenges

    • Testing designs and improving performance

    • Working in small groups to plan and problem-solve

Age-Based Curriculum Structure

To Ensure students are challenged at the right level, the program is divided into three learning groups:

Kindergarten - 1st Grade

Students are introduced to robotics through storytelling, simple builds, and guided exploration. Activities focus on creativity, basic sequencing, and early problem-solving.

Grades 2 - 4

Students begin combining building and coding to complete structured challenges. They explore basic mechanical concepts, sensors, and logical thinking while learning how code controls movement and behavior.

Grades 5 - 8

Older students work on more advanced builds and programming concepts. They apply the engineering design process to plan, build, test, and improve robotic solutions while strengthening teamwork and critical thinking skills.

No prior robotics or coding experience is required for any level. Students are guided step-by-step, with instruction adjusted to each age group so everyone can succeed at their own pace.
